Five ways to attract people to church are building relationships, inviting people to come, offering a welcoming environment, preaching a Word applicable to people’s lives, and praying and reaching out to the community. People should not only be attracted to a programme, they should encounter God and be met with genuine care.
One of the first things is relationships. People are more likely to come when somebody they know and trust will invite them. So don’t just announce that people should come to church, build relationships with people around you. Talk to them, care about them, and let them know that there is a place, where they can belong.
Second, personally invite people. Sometimes we make church growth too complicated. You can simply tell somebody, “I’m going to church on Sunday, come with me.” That personal invitation can make a difference.
Third, make the church welcoming. From the moment somebody enters the church, how are they treated? Are people acknowledging them? Do they know, where to sit? Are the workers friendly? Is the environment ordered? You have to make people feel that they are welcome, without making it artificial.
Fourth, preach the Word in a way people can understand and apply to their lives. The Word of God must remain the Word of God, but people should also be able to understand, how it speaks to their situations. People are dealing with family issues, work, relationships, finances, purpose, and many other things. Teach the Word and help people see how it applies to their lives.
And finally, pray and reach out consistently. Church growth is not only about strategies. We need to pray for people, pray for the church, and ask, that God brings people who need what He has entrusted to us. Then we have to actually reach out and follow up with people.
And please, don’t make the mistake of thinking that attracting people is the same thing as building a church. You can attract people with an event, but you have to build people from the Word, relationships, discipleship, prayer, and genuine care.
