As a leader, you don’t have to be afraid to make decisions simply because people have different opinions about the decisions you are trying to make. You understand? But you should know, everyone will have a different opinion concerning most of the decisions you make as a leader for the ministry.
And sometimes, if you are not careful, you can spend so much time trying to make everybody agree with you before you make a decision. And the truth is, it may not happen. Everybody may not agree with you.
So, what do you do?
First, you listen. You need to allow people to tell you what they think. Because sometimes, somebody can see something that you didn’t see, and that’s important. It doesn’t mean that because you are the leader, you already know everything.
But after you have listened to everybody, there comes a point where you have to make the decision. You can’t keep postponing the decision because one person is not agreeing with you.
And sometimes, you may even make the decision and somebody still doesn’t agree. That’s fine. The person can disagree with the decision, but they should understand that you have listened to them and you’ve considered what they have said.
Because leadership is not about making everybody agree with you. It’s about listening to people, considering what they are saying, making the best decision you can, and then taking responsibility for that decision.
And if later you realise that you made the wrong decision, you should also be humble enough to say, “Okay, I got this one wrong. Let’s correct it.”
That’s also leadership.
