A lot of leaders struggle with delegation because, sometimes, it is not really about the people they want to delegate to… it is about the leader.
Sometimes you are afraid that if you give this thing to somebody else, they may not do it the way you would do it. And because you have done it for a long time, you already know how you want it done. So you say, “Let me just do it myself. It will be faster.”
And honestly, sometimes it is faster to do it yourself. But you can’t build a ministry that depends on you doing everything.
Another thing is trust. Maybe you have delegated before and the person messed it up. So now you are thinking, “I have tried this thing before. Let me just handle it myself.” But if you don’t teach people, give them responsibility, correct them when they make mistakes, and allow them to grow, you will keep doing everything yourself.
And sometimes, it is also because the leader has not trained anybody. You can’t just wake up and say, “Okay, you handle this.” The person may not even know what to do.
So delegation is not just about giving somebody a task. You have to give them responsibility, explain what is expected, give them the tools they need, and then allow them to actually do it.
And you have to allow people to make some mistakes too. Not every mistake means you chose the wrong person. Sometimes, that person is learning.
I think one question every ministry leader should ask themselves is… “Am I protecting the ministry, or am I protecting my control over the ministry?”
Because there is a difference.
Moses had to learn this when Jethro told him, “This thing that thou doest is not good.” He was trying to carry everything himself, and Jethro helped him see that he needed to raise other people to share the responsibility.
You cannot be the person who knows everything, approves everything, does everything, and still expect the ministry to grow beyond you.
Delegation is not losing control… it is developing people and creating capacity for the ministry to grow.
